The ore body at Freda Rebecca was laid down in the Bindura-Shamva greenstone belt, an Archaean formation 2.65 billion years old. The mine above it has had seven different owners since Cluff Resources poured the first gold in 1988.
In March 2007, the mine went to care-and-maintenance. Zimbabwe’s inflation was climbing toward an official peak of 231 million percent, and production was impossible. In March 2026, it produced 240 kg of gold, its highest monthly output since 2023.
The Shona had worked gold on the Zimbabwe plateau since at least the 11th century CE. Their mhizha craftsmen traded through the Munhumutapa state into Indian Ocean networks reaching Kilwa and Sofala.
Algy Cluff arrived in Harare just weeks after Zimbabwe’s independence in 1980. He found the Rhodesian Geological Department’s records intact, and unemployed geologists to read them. Everyone else had pulled out. The knowledge had not. Cluff Resources poured its first gold at Freda Rebecca in 1988. At peak, in 2002, the mine produced just over 3 t of gold a year.
Freda Rebecca employs over 800 people directly. Bindura’s commercial life has tracked the mine’s output for nearly forty years. The mine operates a health centre and a primary school. When the mine restarted in 2009, it offered to re-engage fifty-six of its workers on inferior terms. They refused, and were dismissed. In 2022 the Supreme Court found in their favour and sent the case back to be reheard. It remains unresolved.
In 1996, Ashanti Goldfields Zimbabwe acquired it. AngloGold Ashanti absorbed Ashanti in 2004 and said within months it was willing to sell the Zimbabwe mine. Mwana Africa Plc bought it for US$2m, completing in April 2005, and restarted it in October 2009. The mine passed through ASA Resources and a disputed transfer to Sotic International, which bought it and Bindura Nickel out of administration for £23m, before Kuvimba Mining House took control in 2020. Kuvimba was 65% state-owned. It invested US$22m, lifting monthly output from 150 kg to over 300 kg. A presidential decree in September 2023 moved the state’s Kuvimba shareholding, and those of 22 other enterprises, into the Mutapa Investment Fund. The Fund transferred Freda Rebecca to its state-owned gold subsidiary, Mutapa Gold Resources, on 1 January 2026.
Mutapa Gold Resources is raising US$75m through a local debt issuance. The group is targeting 570 kg per month by 2028 and has stated a total capital requirement of US$250m. Freda Rebecca’s share of that is 270 kg a month. Management puts the mine’s remaining life at four years and is spending US$14m on drilling to take it to ten. Construction at the Shamva Hill open-pit begins in August 2026.
The ore body that Cluff Resources first poured gold from in 1988 poured its best month in years in March 2026.
