How I work
A note on process, editorial authority and responsibility.
This publication carries four series in three forms — essays, stories, and mixed advisory media. They share a method and a set of commitments. This note explains both.
Who this is for
#PatternCounsel is written for General Counsel, Chief Legal Officers and their teams — and for the law firms, legal operations professionals and technology providers who work alongside them.
#MiningIsHuman and #MiningOurHistory are written for anyone interested in Southern African mining and the institutions that have shaped the region — readers who believe these stories deserve to be told.
#BelowTheSurface is written for General Counsel and executives, and board members in mining and other regulated sectors, and reflects the questions that surface in my advisory practice.
What each series is
#PatternCounsel publishes essays on the management and delivery of in-house legal. Each essay explores a single idea or management practice, drawing on where I have seen it succeed, where I have seen it fail, and what I believe can be learned from both.
#MiningIsHuman and #MiningOurHistory publish stories — of the mines, businesses, industries and institutions that have shaped Southern Africa. Each story assembles the public record into a single narrative.
#BelowTheSurface publishes notes, presentations, podcasts, and other media from my independent advisory practice — reflections from the work of sitting with leaders when clarity is needed and stakes are high.
What I write
Very little of what I write is wholly original. It is my own synthesis of ideas, experiences, sources and frameworks that I have found useful over fifteen years of leading legal teams, teaching and learning from in-house lawyers, and advising organisations under pressure.
Where I borrow concepts from management, psychology, organisational theory, history or other disciplines, I undertake sufficient research to ensure that I have understood and represented them fairly and in line with current thinking.
What AI-assisted means
My work is deliberately AI-assisted. I use AI extensively to research, challenge, organise, edit and sharpen my writing, and to create many of the accompanying graphics.
The selection of the subject, the narrative structure, the connections between events, the framings, the professional judgments and the conclusions are my own.
What I do not claim
Unlike historians working from primary archives, experts whose authority has been earned through years of disciplined study and experience, or writers whose work is built on original reporting or literary craft, I make no claim to that kind of expertise or earned authority.
This is something different: a project driven by curiosity, sustained by discipline, and grounded in fifteen years of leading legal teams and advising organisations under pressure.
